Juan Antonio Morales, Former Pres., Central Bank of Bolivia

Juan Antonio Morales has been Professor of Economics and Statistics at The Catholic University of Bolivia in La Paz since 1974, with some interruptions.  He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences at The Catholic University. He has been visiting professor in several universities in Latin America, Europe and the United States and he has published extensively in Spanish, English and French in fields as diverse as econometrics, inflation stabilization and the political economy of economic growth.
           
He was President of the Central Bank of Bolivia from September 1995 to  April 2006 and during his presidency the publication Emerging Markets elected him “Central Banker of the Year for Latin America” in year 2005. During his long tenure at the Bolivian Central Bank he became interested on financial development, regulation and supervision issues of financial intermediaries,  financial deepening and the contribution of finance to economic growth. He has continued his research on those topics after returning to academia. As part of his work on financial markets in developing countries he has been following closely the extraordinary progress of the Bolivian Microfinance  Institutions.
     
Mr. Morales has been a consultant for many international agencies and governments in Latin America [Bolivia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba] and Angola in Africa and for several international organizations [USAID, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Andean Community of Nations, UNDP, the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America, Joint Studies of Latin American Economic Integration (ECIEL), IDRC of Canada]. He served in the Executive Committee of the International Economic Association in 1991-1995. He holds the degree of  Docteur en Sciences Economiques granted by the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium where he studied.
