Alexander Sarris, Food and Agriculture Administration

Alexander Sarris is since 2003 Director of the Trade and Markets Division, of FAO. He is also Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Athens, Greece since 1982 (currently on leave). He holds a PhD in economics from the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, and Masters and BS degrees from MIT in electrical engineering. He was assistant professor at the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics of the University of California at Berkeley, USA from 1977 to 1982. He has authored or co-authored more than 15 books and monographs, and more than 70 journal and book articles on various issues of international trade and development, has received the Best Paper Award by the American Agricultural Economics Association, in 1984, and the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award, by the American Agricultural Economics Association, in 1978, and has served in the editorial boards of several academic journals. Prior to joining FAO, he has advised extensively FAO and other UN organizations, the World Bank, the European Commission, and other national and international agencies, and has field research and policy advice experience in over 20 countries. He has served in the Board of Directors, and also as chairman of the Board, of the Brussels based Center for Development of Industry (CDI now Center for Development of Enterprise, or CDE), as chair of the EU’s Committee of Article 113 (now 133) that proposes EU trade policy to the EU Council of Ministers, and as chairman of the Athens based Center for Planning and Economic Research. He is a member of many professional associations. His professional and research interests include; Development Economics; Applied International Economics; Food and Agriculture Policy; Labour migration; Macro-Micro Modelling; Income Distribution and Poverty; Commodity Market and Price Analysis.
